Revisiting Remedies from WWII

Published on 13 November 2023 at 11:42

It doesn't matter what season we are in, colds and flu do not care.  There are many over the counter medicines to take and as long as you have enough chicken soup and Kleenex, you should be half way to healing!    I do have an amazing recipe to give you that is easy to make and from a former co-worker  who offered her Mom's recipe from World War II.

As Follows:

Juice 2 Lemons

Juice 2 Grapefruits. Use organic for both fruits, that way there isn't any wax on them.

Cut them up and boil in 6 cups of water for 20 minutes.

Strain Liquid into a jar and sweeten with honey.

Sip as needed during illness.

These ingredients are not random choices that are being used.  Moms, Dads and Grandparents alike knew the benefits of each item and how they help the body heal.

#1 Lemon:  An excellent source of immunity-boosting vitamin C!

#2 Grapefruit:  Provides a significant amount of fiber, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

#3 Honey:  Heals sore throats and is a natural antibiotic.  Get locally sourced honey to support your beekeepers!

This is just one of many remedies that were used for colds and flu.  With many more such as Mustard Plaster and Hot Toddy!!!

Tell us your favorite go to recipes for what ails you and we will share it with the community!!

Stay safe and be healthy!!!

Blessings Heidi and Jane!

There's another important reason to use local honey -- bees use local pollen to make it, which you the user would have adapted to. So this makes that particular honey more healthful than stuff from other parts of the country or the world.

The thing about the honey is that you should not add it to the concoction until it has cooled to room temperature. The hot liquid will ruin the therapeutic qualities of the honey.
